Scissors: care tips

Barber scissors and professional tailor scissors are often very expensive tools. You can keep your scissors in good condition for longer if you will regularly provide them with a bit of care.

  • Use your scissors with care, avoid dropping them, hitting hard objects with them, do not try twisting or bending the scissors.
  • Always keep your scissors clean. After you are done working with scissors, clean them well and store in a cool dry place.
  • We recommend the use of separate scissor bags for storing scissors. These can be both commercial and DIY-made. An example of such a bag can be seen in the image below:
  • Try to regularly put apart your scissors to clean up the screw area. Add a drop of machine oil to the parts so that the scissors would continue on cutting smoothly. If you can’t dismember your scissors, then add oil when the scissors are kept in an open position.
  • DO NOT use grease or similar waxes for oiling your scissors. The best choice of oil for scissors is the machine oil made for sewing machines.
  • NEVER try to sharpen your scissors yourself, unless you are a professional sharpener who has a lot of experience with sharpening scissors. An amateur sharpener can cause serious damage to scissors, one that might have scissors being completely ruined. Always use professional sharpening services when sharpening your expensive cutting tools!
