Replacing a handle on a knife can seriously prolong the life of the knife. We at hawatari are specialized in handcrafting handles for kitchen knives, both Western style and Japanese style. We used only natural and harmless materials – natural wood, harmless metals, food safe glue and fillings. Handles are made by hand with the accordance of traditional Japanese woodworking methods.

Urushi treated Japanese style handle
Handle in the picture above is treated with Japanese urushi lacquer of 2 different colors. Urushi lacquer treatment greatly improves strength and water resistance of natural wood.
Japanese style handles that we manufacture are branded at the bottom with our own 万 (ichiman) brand. Japanese kanji letter 万 (ichiman) is translated as “valuable“.

We prioritize highest quality and do all the work “in house”, to ensure that handles that we manufacture are great looking and are at the same time durable. It takes at least 7-10 days to make a handle for a knife.
Please understand that the final price for a handle replacement depends on the customer’s preferences and materials used. Therefore the final price is determined on “case by case” principles and in close negotiations between hawatari and the customer. The basic starting price for handle replacement is in any case a fee of 50 euro.
